Present day

Today there is little to see of Pompey’s grand theatre complex above ground.  Only a ghostly outline is preserved by the contours of the modern buildings on the site, and revealed in aerial photographs. Extensive new excavation of the structure is no longer feasible as the buildings overlying the site are of historical significance in their own right. Professor Beacham (King's College, London, UK), is leading an international team recording and computer mapping the extant remains of the site, and conducting discrete 'key hole' archaeology within this historically sensitive area.
