The Marble Plan

It is believed that Pompey’s theatre was very carefully laid out according to strict geometric principles. The first century BC Roman architect Vitruvius, discusses the layout of a typical Roman theatre in his book, De Architectura, and he based his analysis upon the theatre of Pompey.

The site In relationship to the modern city

The image preserved in the ancient map can be superimposed upon the modern street layout of Rome, to indicate where the theatre complex was located. A basic computer reconstruction of the site can then be overlaid showing its relationship to existing streets.
