Other Odeons/Odea

By definition an Odeon is a music or concert-hall. The name odeon or odeion, from the Latin odium, is derived from ode or song. The Odeon of Pericles was first designated an odeon, by Pausanias and Vitruvius, who cite the building in their descriptions of Athens.

As is the case with the Odeon of Pericles, odeons tend to be situated within the vicinity of larger open-air theatres. They are distinguished from them by their outer walls and theatrum tectum (or roof), and their smaller size.

Other examples of outdoor theatres which neighbour (or neighboured) odeons include Lyon and Vienne, France; Naples and Taormina, Italy; Amman, Syria; Aspendus, Pamphlia; and Termessus and Sagalasus, Pisidia.
