The works of the three great playwrights Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles were probably never staged in their entirety in the theatre at Epidaurus in antiquity.
In fact, the works of these three great Tragic poets belong more properly to the previous (fifth) century BC, and to the early Theatre of Dionysus in Athens.
In Athens the works of these great writers were staged as part of a twice-yearly competition that formed part of two Athenian civic festivals: the City Dionysia (during the spring) and the Lenaia (in winter).
Epidaurus was instead a venue for the presentation of somewhat more limited dramatic 'selections', Homeric recitation, speeches, and in particular, the presentation of short musical entertainments and songs.
