Ennius, Quintus

(239-169 BC) Roman poet and playwright. Originally Oscan, he was awarded Roman citizenship, and admired and supported by leading politicians. Titles of twenty tragedies survive (and about 400 lines), mostly on Euripidean themes and subject matter. He emphasized pathos and rhetorical effects, as well as everyday problems and ethical questions.
